Renewing your North Carolina Drivers License

You can renew by mail if you have been living outside of the state for 30 days or are in the armed forces on active duty and stationed outside of North Carolina. Licenses renewed by mail are only temporary. Send required forms and information to the following address:

In Person

To renew your North Carolina drivers license in person, you'll need to complete the following steps:

  • Bring your expired or current license with you, or another way to prove your identity.
  • Bring proof of Social Security number if it isn’t on file with the DMV.
  • Take and pass sign and vision tests
  • Pay fees based upon the number of years until the license expires

Required Documents

To renew your drivers license, you’ll need two of the following documents:

  • Your current license or proof of your identity
  • Birth certificate
  • Your original Social Security card
  • School documents such as a diploma
  • Military ID
  • Passport
  • Certified marriage certificate
  • NC Limited Driving Privilege
  • U.S. government documents
  • U.S. Veterans Universal Access card
  • Court documents

You can pay for your fees by check money order, or by cash. Credit cards arе not accepted for the renewal process.

  • Class A, B, and C licenses are $4 per year.
  • The CDL is $15 per year; the full five or eight years is paid upfront.
