In addition, you can call to see if your DMV allows you to make a personal appointment.

Renewing Your North Carolina Vehicle Registration

Renewing your tag is an easy process in North Carolina, as you are given option of renewing in person, online, or via mail.

North Carolina allows some drivers to renew their registration online, provided that they meet the certain state requirements. In order to register online, visit the North Carolina DMV and follow the instructions given. You will receive an email within three days stating if the process was successful or not. 

To renew your North Carolina vehicle registration in person, visit for a list of DMV offices in the state of North Carolina. You will also be required to present proof of passed inspection, your renewal notice, license plate number, insurance information and check, cash, or money order to pay required fees. To use a check, make sure you have two forms of ID with you.

If you’re out of state or can’t make it into an office, then North Carolina allows you to renew your tag by mail. First, complete your renewal notice, and/or provide proof you passed your inspection. Be sure to enclose payment for required fees and $1 extra for return postage and mail everything to:
